Community development & Economic Empowerment (Building Bridges)

Supporting survivors, women and vulnerable individuals to build skills, strengthen livelihoods and shape more secure economic futures.

Our Activities

Economic insecurity can limit independence and increase vulnerability. Ilitha Labantu supports women and vulnerable individuals to strengthen their economic prospects through employment readiness, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, livelihood development, mentoring and other skills-building opportunities.

Employment Readiness Training

Ilitha Labantu provides practical skills training that helps survivors, women and other vulnerable individuals build pathways towards employment and sustainable livelihoods. Through Building Bridges, the organisation’s holistic skills development and employment readiness programme, participants have undertaken vocational courses including nail technology, with additional opportunities such as sewing, make-up and beauty skills planned as the programme grows. Training combines practical skills with workplace readiness, career guidance and confidence-building to support income generation.

Ilitha Labantu’s registration as an academy with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) is strengthening the formal recognition and long-term value of its training programmes.

Entrepreneurship Support

Ilitha Labantu supports women to explore entrepreneurship as a pathway to greater economic independence. This includes practical training in entrepreneurship, business development, financial management and other skills needed to establish and sustain livelihoods. The programme also seeks to create opportunities for women entrepreneurs to access markets and grow their businesses, including through procurement and opportunities to provide goods and services to Ilitha Labantu and its partners.

By combining skills development with practical opportunities, the programme helps women develop sustainable livelihoods, strengthen economic agency and turn their capabilities into sustainable sources of income.

Financial Literacy Programmes

Financial literacy is an important foundation for economic resilience and independence. Ilitha Labantu provides opportunities for participants to develop practical knowledge around managing income and expenses, budgeting, saving, financial planning and making informed financial decisions. These skills help women and vulnerable individuals better manage available resources, plan for their futures and build greater household financial resilience.

For survivors in particular, strengthening financial knowledge can contribute to greater confidence and independence when making decisions about their livelihoods, personal safety and wellbeing.

Mentoring and Lifeskills

Economic empowerment involves more than developing technical or vocational skills. Ilitha Labantu provides mentoring and life-skills support that helps participants build confidence, self-belief, decision-making abilities, communication skills, resilience and greater self-reliance. This is particularly important for survivors, for whom rebuilding confidence and a sense of agency can be an important part of their healing and journey towards independence.

By creating supportive spaces for learning, reflection and personal development, the programme helps participants recognise their strengths, navigate opportunities and challenges, and make choices that support their wellbeing and future.
