NGO CSW Identifies Five Priorities to Advance Gender Equality Ahead of CSW71

The NGO Committee on the Status of Women/New York (NGO CSW/NY) Advocacy and Research Group has identified five key priorities and recommendations to accelerate progress on gender equality ahead of the 71st session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW71).
Titled “Women and Girls Will Not Wait Another 171 Years”, the recommendations highlight the urgent need for stronger commitments, accountability and sustained investment in women's and girls' rights. With none of the Sustainable Development Goal 5 targets currently on track, the paper calls for action that includes women and girls of all ages and backgrounds, particularly adolescent girls and young women.
The five priorities are:
Ending violence against women and girls: Strengthening survivor-centred support systems, improving access to healthcare, protection and justice, strengthening legal frameworks, addressing technology-facilitated violence and ensuring sustained funding for prevention and response services.
Decent work and economic empowerment: Advancing equal pay, labour rights and social protection, closing gaps in access to land, finance and economic opportunities, and investing in women's entrepreneurship and skills development.
Women's leadership and decision-making: Removing structural barriers to women's participation across political, economic and social institutions, increasing representation in leadership and investing in women-led organisations and initiatives.
Quality education and lifelong learning: Ensuring inclusive, safe and accessible education for all women and girls, while strengthening opportunities to develop the skills, resources and confidence needed for economic independence and leadership.
Peace, security and prosperity: Ensuring women's meaningful participation in peacebuilding and conflict prevention, strengthening protections for women and girls affected by conflict, and securing accountability and justice for gender-based crimes.
Across all five priorities, the recommendations emphasise that gender equality requires more than policy commitments. It demands meaningful participation, adequate resources and accountability to ensure that women's rights translate into lasting change.
