Ilitha Labantu is deeply concerned by the discovery of eight women’s bodies in Gauteng in recent weeks, highlighting the persistent threat of violence against women and children in South Africa.

Violence against women in South Africa has reached pandemic proportions. Not a day goes by without reports of the violence and abuse faced by women and girls. With the country’s femicide rate significantly higher than the global rate, this crisis demands urgent and sustained action.

Women should be able to move through their communities, travel, work and exercise without fear for their lives. Yet the continued killing of women underscores the need for a society that refuses to normalise violence or accept these deaths as inevitable.

Ilitha Labantu calls for thorough and urgent investigations into each case, with those responsible held accountable. However, addressing this crisis requires more than responses after lives have been lost. It demands sustained investment in prevention, stronger community safety mechanisms, and law enforcement agencies equipped to investigate cases effectively.

Families affected by these deaths must also be treated with dignity and receive timely information and appropriate support. Behind every case is a woman whose life mattered, and a family and community left to carry the consequences of her loss.

The continued killing of women, and the fear experienced b

y women and girls across the country, are a further reminder that statements of concern are not enough. Meaningful progress requires decisive action to prevent violence, strengthen accountability and protect women and girls.
